Umbria, the green soul of Italy
Our search for the perfect homestead started in Umbria. It is a region that feels ancient and grounded, often called the “Green Heart of Italy.” For us, Umbria is defined by its dramatic, dense forests and mist-covered valleys that hide some of the most stunning medieval hilltop towns you will ever encounter. We felt in love with the town of Perugia and want to do a special shout out to a small town in the middle of nowhere called Doglio. While Umbria lacks the coastline we eventually fell in love with in Le Marche, it offers a deep, mystical connection to nature and kitchen that makes every meal feel like a warm embrace. It is a place for slow wandering and quiet reflection.
One of the best parts about our life here at HOMESTEAD HILL is that we don’t have to choose between regions. Even though we are firmly rooted in the rolling hills of Ripatransone, Umbria is practically our neighbor. Depending on which mountain pass you take through the stunning Sibillini range, you can drive from our farm in Ripa to the Umbrian border in less than an hour. It’s close enough for us to pop over for a day trip and return back home for a magnificient sunset.
