Driving Abruzzo

Italy’s wild side: Abruzzo

Abruzzo is probably the neighbouring region to Le Marche that we know least.. but got us hooked 100%. Abruzzo is perfect for anyone searching for a connection to nature that still feels raw and untouched. Here, the mountains meet the sea in a dramatic and unpolished embrace. This first time when we were in Abruzzo we (literally) were speeding not to be caught in the mountains during heavy rain showers. Then (at the end of 2025, because the departure times were more favorable to us), we started to take flights at Pescara instead of Ancona. We are captivated by the sight of the Gran Sasso d’Italia, the highest peak in the Apennines, which dominates the skyline like a silent guardian. In Abruzzo, you can be skiing on a mountain in the morning and eating fresh seafood on a trabocco (an ancient wooden fishing platform) by the Adriatic in the afternoon.

Abruzzo offers an authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere. From our farm in Ripa, we can actually see the peaks of the mountains marking the border between Le Marche and Abruzzo. The drive from Ripatransone into the province of Teramo takes less than 30 minutes.
