Water management at Homestead Hill

At Homestead Hill, water is our absolute top priority. Situated on a southwest-facing slope of heavy clay soil in Ripatransone, our land experiences hot summers and intense rain events. Because a municipal water connection alone will not be sufficient for irrigation, securing our own independent water supply is vital.

To honor our commitment to absolute water conservation, we work entirely without synthetic chemicals and treat every drop as a precious resource. Here is how we manage our water naturally and efficiently via our 5-point plan.

1. Working with the natural land contour for drainage

We design our land along natural contours using interconnected platforms, rather than straight up-and-down lines. This slows surface runoff, prevents severe soil erosion and maximizes soil absorption.

2. High-point well and gravity distribution

Drilling our private well at the highest point of the terrain allows us to store extracted groundwater at the top of the hill. From there, we use natural gravity to distribute water passively down to every zone, ensuring reliable irrigation without relying on continuous electrical power.

3. Ecological ditches

We maintain open, vegetated municipal boundary ditches (fossi) bordered by 2-meter buffer strips sown with clover and wildflowers to stabilize the slope.

4. Precision drip irrigation

To ensure zero water waste, every tree is fed by dedicated pressure-compensating drippers. These deliver an exact, uniform amount of water to each plant regardless of elevation differences, preventing runoff and protecting our reserves.

5. Organic mulching

We apply heavy layers of natural organic mulch around the bases of all our young fruit and olive trees. This shield traps ground moisture, drastically reduces evaporation in the summer heat, and builds healthy topsoil over time.
