Offida
Perched atop a rocky cliff in the Piceno region, Offida is widely celebrated as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (I Borghi più belli d’Italia). Renowned for its delicate bobbin lacemaking, striking architecture, and prestigious winemaking traditions, Offida offers a perfect blend of rich history and vibrant local culture.
Arriving in Offida
To make the most of your visit, avoid driving directly into the narrow historic streets. Right before the village center, you will find a large, convenient parking lot situated directly in front of a spacious supermarket. This is the ideal starting point.
From this parking area, walk past the imposing medieval brick walls and bastions that still guard the town’s perimeter. As you stroll down the sun-drenched cobblestone avenues lined with traditional shops and historic facades, we recommend setting the magnificent Chiesa di Santa Maria della Rocca as your final destination at the far end of the village.
Explore & experience
The social and architectural heart of the town is the triangular Piazza del Popolo, dominated by the elegant 15th-century Palazzo Comunale with its striking clock tower and sweeping porticoes. Tucked inside this building is the hidden gem of the Teatro Serpente Aureo, a stunning miniature 18th-century opera house.
While exploring the side streets branching off the main piazza, you will likely hear the gentle, rhythmic click of wooden bobbins. Offida is the historic capital of merletto a tombolo (bobbin lace), a centuries-old craft passed down through generations. The town honors this enduring tradition with a beautiful public monument featuring bronze statues of three women weaving lace around a serene fountain.
Your walk culminates at the breathtaking Chiesa di Santa Maria della Rocca. This 14th-century Romanesque-Gothic church stands dramatically on a steep rocky outcrop at the very edge of town. Step inside to navigate its forest of brick columns, explore the ancient crypt, and admire beautifully preserved medieval frescoes by the Maestro di Offida.

Local flavors
Offida is the undisputed capital of Piceno winemaking and gives its name to the highly regulated Offida DOCG appellation. This terroir produces world-class white wines like crisp Pecorino and floral Passerina, as well as robust Rosso Piceno. While on the Piazza del Popolo, visit the showroom of Ciù Ciù, one of the region’s most famous wineries, to sample a glass directly from the source.
For a sweet treat, you are just steps away from Amor di Gelato, widely considered one of the finest artisanal gelaterias in the area – look for their signature wrought-iron bench to enjoy your cone in the shade. When it comes to savory, opt for true Offida specialties. Order a slice of Chichì ripieno, a flavorful local rustic flatbread generously stuffed with tuna, capers, tomatoes, and anchovies. Before leaving, stop by a local bakery for the traditional Funghetto di Offida, a crisp, labor-intensive aniseed biscuit made simply with sugar, water, and flour.
